I recently discovered that the unit can be stood on its end and has feet on the bottom. I use it with the feet extended so that the grease drips towards the back into the drip pan. The instructions advised a trial run for 10 to 15 minutes with it closed to prevent smoking, which I did. Although it still smokes, it doesn't seem to be a major issue after using it about six times. Initially, it ran a little hot and I had to keep a close eye on it, but it has improved with more use. I always stand next to it and wait for the green light before taking the sandwich out, which has made the process easier. The unit also has a floating top, allowing for thicker pieces of bread or sandwiches. However, multiple sandwiches must be the same thickness.
